TAKE A TRIP WITHOUT LUGGAGE AT THE ACID TEST!
Chicago improv comedy group THE WRECKING CREW is currently working
on THE ACID TEST 1966, the story of a night of tripping on LSD-
before the drug was made a federal crime. The show mixes comedy,
drama and dance in a unique presentation of the parties that swept
America in 1966 after Ken Keysey first started them at the
beginning of the year.
Mark Mothersbaugh is in the band DEVO (remember "Whip
It"?) and also
does music for film and TV including the superb THE ROYAL
TENNENBAUMS, RUSHMORE and RUGRATS. Mark provides original music
for the shows "peak" dance which captures the trippers at the
height of their drug induced revelry.
The show is presented using unusual non- theatrical settings and
the audience and the room become the stage area. THE WRECKING
CREW has previously played unusual settings before (the Biograph
Theater, The Three Penny movie theater, the Chase Cafe). THE ACID
TEST 1966 is their first long form dramedy.
Now- let's meet THE WRECKING CREW:
KAI COLLINS - plays Eve a young girl crashing at "pads" on the
west coast who has arrived in Los Angeles to trip the night away.
Kai is a member of the Second City Conservatory and has performed
improv from San Diego to Massachussets. She has also studied
ballet, modern dance and has been a soul music DJ in San
Francisco.
GEORGE DICKSON - plays Wild Bill the musician whose home has
become the setting for the acid test. George studied improv with
comedy cult legend Mick Napier and has performed with The Second
City and ImprovOlympic. He is a master horseman, and he fences
and likes to juggle. He is also a filmmaker.
MICHAEL FLORES - plays Albert Hubbard, the CIA agent who "turned
on" Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, Cary Grant and often provided
government quality LSD at many early "happenings". This show was
created by Michael who has created over a dozen original shows.
For the last six years his shows have run anywhere from 33 weeks
to a year and a half. The play BETTIE PAGE UNCENSORED was adapted
into a movie and is available on DVD at e-Bay and the website:
www.psychotronic.info Michael is a Chicago Pope of the Church
of the SubGenius and did live comedy with improv guru Del Close
for 6 years. In 1966 he first took LSD- and lost his virginity.
At the age of 12. Michael is also a DJ who spins mashups, a new
form of dance music from Europe.
JONATHAN HOOD - plays Randall a square new to the scene. He is
trying to become hip, and Wild Bill has taken him under his wing.
Jonathan is a house music DJ in Chicago and a founding member of
THE WRECKING CREW. He hates the nickname Bobo, so naturally
that's what Mike calls him!
SARAH McCOMBER - plays Naomi, a girl who has fled her parents in
Maine to discover the scene in Los Angeles. Sarah is a model,
actress and improviser who is currently practicing guitar to play
punk rock music. Sarah can probably drink Mike under the table.
Not an easy task.
PAVEL POURMAL - plays Dan the fan, a writer who quit his job at a
major newspaper to write for the LA Free Press, an early
underground paper. Often for no money. Pavel is studying
business and this is his debut show. He was discovered hanging
out at the Albion beach in Rogers Park surrounded by beautiful
women. Don't tell me Michael can't spot talent!
KATYFLYNN WALSH - plays Nancy, a straight girl who has shown up
to see what the fuss is about. And ends up taking LSD without
realyzing it. Little did Katy's parents realize when they wed at
a love- in in the park that their child would grow up to do a play
based on their own lives! Katy has 8 years of dance and an acting
bug that has forced her into a life of waitressing. I bet she
wouldn't have it any other way.......
Here are some of the other folks involved in the project:
KATHERINE SOUTHERLAND - is an executive producer and costumer for
THE ACID TEST. She formerly created shows that are now in the Gay
and Lesbian Theatre archives in Chicago and San Francisco. She
knew Michael for almost 16 years and performed with him,
Ivan
Stang and Del in various Subgeius shows in Chicago before they wed
and she became pan sexual. She is hand making many of the
costumes you will see in THE ACID TEST .
CARIE BADGETT - is an associate producer of THE ACID TEST. She is
currently studying computer architecture in the grad school
program at IIT, perhaps the toughest school for that sort of thing
in the country. She does algorythms for fun. She built her own
computer. She looks like Cameron Diaz. Life is rough!
DR. JOHN ZIELINSKI - is the doctor for THE WRECKING CREW making
our group one of the only groups in town with something
resembling
a medical plan!
