What's a Video Premiere?
While the Movie Madness section was created to cover new psychotronic
films opening in theaters, many of you have complained that the emphasis is mostly on
mainstream Hollywood product, and not the Z-grade Poverty Row productions that typify much
of psychotronica cinematis.
Most of the drive-ins are closed, and those that stay open show the same
movies as the hardtops now. The downtown grindhouse districts have been bought out by
corporations like Disney to be transformed into "family entertainment centers".
But trashy, sleazy, low-budget psychotronic films are still being made by dreamy-eyed
idealists, as well as those just out to make a fast buck and get into show biz. Also,
there's still a lot of cinematic weirdness going on overseas. But how is a p-fan supposed
to see these little gems?
The same medium that helped destroy those aforementioned shrines is the
one that's picked up the torch: home video! the cheesy animated GIF image above will
accompany films we review that are making their debut on videotape, laserdisc, DVD, or
whatever. Most of these will be features produced expressly for the video market, but some
will be features intended for the big screen that didn't quite make it - at least in the
USA. In special cases we may even cover an old theatrical film that's been
"lost" or is making it to vid in a "special edition". But don't expect
anything that we consider "mainstream" to get this treatment.
Distributors wishing to send features for review, please e-mail me for a mailing address.
It's hoped that by expanding our home video coverage we can fill in the
cracks in our discussion of this cracked subject.
Cheers!
